At Tacoma last night, it was fielding that cost the River Cats a series sweep. Second Baseman Corey Wimberly failed to turn an inning ending double play when he overthrew first baseman Chris Carter allowing the lead run to score. Tacoma held on and sent the Cats home with their third loss of the season.
In Reno, the Aces held off a Bees comeback. Going into the bottom of the ninth The Aces were in a 6-6 battle after leading 6-0 in the 3rd. Sean Coughlin led off with a double and was sacrificed to third. The Bees threw two intentional walks to load the bases when Ed Rodgers came to the plate. His single on a line drive to center fielder Peter Bourjos scored the winning run and sent the Aces to the bus for Sacramento.
River Cat Prospects
Sacramento is counting on Chris Carter to continue his power hitting production from 2009. He only played 13 games as a Cat last year but in the playoffs the 6'5" first baseman hit four home runs in the first four playoff games. They are also counting on outfielder Chris Carson, who hit 25 Home Runs last year, to keep pounding the fences.
The Cats are also bringing back Marcus MacBeth. He was originally drafted as a position player by the A's in 2001. He subsequently switched to pitching and was a fixture on the River Cat's staff in 2006-7 but was then traded to the Cincinatti Reds where he had a brief appearance in the show. After a year with the Boston Red Sox organization, he has returned to Sacramento to see whether pitching coach Rick Rodriguez can get him to Oakland.
Sagging Attendance
Hoping to bolster sagging attendance that has dropped from over 12,000 in their inaugural seaon in 2000 to just over 9,000 last year, River Cats management has installed a new 800 square foot HD video board with a 44 foot diagonal screen. The first 10,000 fans to arrive at the home opener will receive magnet schedules. Tonight's game will also feature Dollar Dogs and Desserts and All-You-Can-Eat concessions for Diamond Club members!
